About Island of Korčula

Tourism has a years-long tradition on the island of Korčula. Visitor opportunities of the island of Korčula include water sports, diving expeditions and diving courses, a rich cultural life and entertainment programs. Cultural events of "Moreška" and "Kumpanija" have become world-famous.

Gastronomic offer includes famous fish specialities and exquisite, top-class local wines (Posip, Rukatac, Grk, Plavac), due to which Korčula is also called "the island of wines". The local cuisine is also famous for traditional cakes and sweets, such as "cukarini", "kroštule" and "prikle".

Major places on the coast are Korčula, Lumbarda, Vela Luka, Račišće, and in the interior Blato, Žrnovo, Smokvica, Čara and Pupnat.

Korčula

The town of Korčula is the historical centre of the island and has a very nice location in the Pelješac Channel. It is also known for its outstanding cultural and historical heritage. Today Korčula is an important tourist centre.

The most important cultural event is the traditional chivalrous game called "Moreška". It has been performed in Korčula since the 15th century. Moreška is performed every year on the 29th of July, together with the celebration of St. Todor, but also on several occasions during the tourist season.

Many cultural and sports events take place during the summer months like music festivals, theatre and folk music performances, sports contests, yachting regattas, etc.

Blato

Blato is a town in the interior of the island of Korcula. The centre of the town features a nice line of lime-trees, stretching for more than 1 km, providing a unique experience in June, when lime-trees are blossoming.

The inhabitants of Blato have always cherished their tradition and culture. The chivalrous game called "kumpanija", is one of the most interesting traditions in Blato, and regularly takes place on the 28th of April.

On southern coast there are the picturesque coves of Gršćica and Prižba and Karbuni. In front of them is a group of islands with beautiful beaches. On the northern coast is the Prigradica Cove with a nice harbour.

Vela Luka

Vela Luka is a town and port on the western side of the island of Korčula, and it's lies on the regional road running along the island 45 km to the west of the town of Korčula.

Vela Luka offers its visitors all advantages of modern tourism. From variety of restaurants offering seafood and quality wines to sport, recreational and entertainment facilities.

Above Vela Luka on about 130m attitude there is the most significant pre-historic site of Korčula island, Vela Spila. The Cave interior measures ca. 15000m2, and thus far only small part has been explored.
